World's Largest Aircraft Lands At Kolkata Airport: Check Out All The Details
The Airbus Beluga XL, recognised as the world's largest aircraft, recently made its inaugural landing at Kolkata Airport. This marked a significant event as it was the first time this particular model touched down at this location. Previously, an earlier version of the Beluga XL had visited the airport, but this was the debut for the upgraded model.
On Tuesday night at 10:43 pm, the aircraft arrived from Bahrain International Airport. It received a ceremonial water salute upon landing. The Beluga XL is known for its impressive size and capability to transport large containers and essential aircraft parts. This visit to Kolkata was primarily for crew rest and refuelling.

The Beluga XL boasts a whale-like design, earning it the nickname "whale in the sky" among aviation enthusiasts. Its dimensions are substantial, with an overall length of 63.10 metres (207 feet) and a height of 18.9 metres. The wingspan measures 60.3 metres, contributing to its distinctive appearance.
This aircraft is adept at carrying cargo, with a capacity to transport up to 44 tons. This represents a 30% increase in space compared to its predecessors. Additionally, it has a maximum range capability of 4,000 km, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines.
The decision to land in Kolkata was strategic due to its unique facilities in eastern India capable of accommodating such an aircraft. The Beluga XL belongs to the Airbus factory in Toulouse and is en route to Tianjin, China, carrying essential parts for another Airbus unit operating there.
The aircraft's stopover in Kolkata was brief, intended for logistical reasons such as crew rest and refuelling before continuing its journey. The presence of this aircraft highlights Kolkata's capability to handle large-scale aviation operations.

Design and Engineering Excellence
The Beluga XL's design is inspired by marine life, specifically whales, which is evident in its large body section. This design not only enhances its cargo capacity but also contributes to its unique aesthetic appeal.
The aircraft's engineering allows it to efficiently transport heavy loads over long distances. Its advanced features make it an essential asset for Airbus in transporting critical components across continents.
DriveSpark Thinks
The recent landing of the Airbus Beluga XL at Kolkata Airport underscores its role in global aviation logistics. Its ability to carry large cargo efficiently makes it indispensable for transporting essential parts worldwide. As it prepares to continue its journey to China, this event highlights Kolkata's strategic importance in international aviation routes.
