Bentley Continental GT3 Racer Reveal At Goodwood

By Ganesh

Last year at the Paris Auto Show when Bentley first revealed the Continental GT3 racer concept we knew for sure it would be fascinating to see a nearly 3 ton luxury car being turned into a nimble GT3 racer. And fascinating it definitely is.

The final version of the Bentley Continental GT3 racer was unveiled for the public to see last weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. While it is a full fledged racer now, parts of the car, such as the seats and steering wheel cover have still been hand stitched like in a regular Bentley Continental GT.

The car was on display at the F1 paddock at Goodwood along with the original Continental GT3 Concept racer from Paris. The car was driven up the hill twice a day by 2003 Le Mans champion, Guy Smith. You can watch the Bentley Continental GT3 Racer in action at the end of the slide.

The most fascinating aspect about the Continental GT3 racer is its extreme light weight. The car now weight just 1,300 kg. That's nearly 1500 kg less than what a regular Continental weights. This was achieved by virtually stripping off its entire interior and fitting it with lightweight racing seats and a few other racing car essentials.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, has been retained, but not before twiddling with it so that it now produces a healthy 600 HP. This has been fitted to a Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox that drives the rear wheels via a pneumatic shift system, controlled via steering mounted paddle shifters.

Member of the Board for Engineering, Rolf Frech, comments: "The Continental GT3 exploits the incredible performance beneath the skin of every Continental GT. We've removed over 1000 kilograms of weight, reconfigured our 4.0-litre V8 to produce 600 bhp in race specification, and developed a comprehensive aerodynamic package to ensure that we perform competitively. We are now looking forward to getting the car on the track and proving its potential."
