Switch IeV3 And IeV4 Review | A Worthy Electric Commercial Vehicle?
Recently, we had the opportunity to test the 2024 models of Switch IeV4 and Switch IeV3 electric commercial vehicles. The evaluation unfolded at the Ashok Leyland Technical Centre in Chennai, involving a series of tests like high-speed track performance, gradient handling, and maneuverability on an open ground, offering a deep dive into these vehicles' capabilities.
Design and Aesthetics
The design of the Switch IeV3 and IeV4 electric commercial vehicles is notably influenced by their internal combustion engine counterparts, the Ashok Leyland Dost and Bada Dost. Sporting sleek headlamps, a seamlessly integrated closed grille, a strategically placed charging port, and distinctive EV-specific graphics, these vehicles stand out with a contemporary and streamlined appearance.
The interior of each model is crafted to provide a comfortable and efficient workspace, equipped with modern amenities like USB charging ports and a sophisticated dual-tone dashboard in the IeV4, enhancing the overall driving and passenger experience.
Specs and Dimensions
Under the hood, the Switch IeV3 is equipped with a 25.6kWh battery and a 40 kW motor delivering 190 Nm of torque, while the Switch IeV4 is powered by a more potent 60 kW motor, offering 230 Nm of torque through a 32.2kWh battery.
The payload capacity for the IeV3 and IeV4 is 1200 kg and 1700 kg, respectively, with the IeV4 providing a larger cargo space to accommodate more substantial loads. Dimensions of the IeV3 and IeV4 storage deck stand at 8ft x 5ft x 1.6ft and 9ft x 5ft x 1.7ft, respectively.
Despite their differences in power and capacity, both vehicles are designed with efficiency in mind, offering a considerable range on a single charge and reasonable charging times.
Driving Impressions
High-Speed Track: Both vehicles performed admirably on the high-speed track. The IeV4, in particular, exhibited exceptional stability and comfort, even at speeds of 60km/h. However, the IeV3 felt less composed, with noticeable body roll and a less responsive steering system.
Empty Ground Handling: On the empty ground, both vehicles demonstrated impressive maneuverability. The IeV4's tight turning radius and responsive steering made it a joy to drive, while the IeV3 also performed well, albeit with slightly less agility.
Gradient Test: The gradient test revealed some differences between the two models. The IeV3 struggled to climb the steeper 10.6° gradient in drive mode, requiring the activation of hill control. In sport mode, the battery provided additional power to assist in the ascent. The IeV4, on the other hand, handled the 10.6° gradient with relative ease.
Final Verdict
In comparing the Switch IeV4 with the Switch IeV3, it's clear that the IeV4 stands out for drivers seeking superior stability, comfort, and overall performance in an electric commercial vehicle, but is priced higher at Rs. 15.3 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom).
However, the IeV3 also presents a viable option for those looking for an efficient and more affordable electric vehicle solution, priced at Rs. 12.33 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom). Its performance, although slightly less impressive than that of the IeV4, still meets the essential requirements for various commercial needs.
Both the Switch IeV3 and IeV4 electric commercial vehicles emerge as compelling choices for prospective buyers in the electric vehicle market. With their distinctive design, robust specifications, and impressive performance capabilities, these vehicles are set to offer viable, eco-friendly alternatives for commercial transportation needs.
