This unit, under the JV with Renault, has the capacity of 2 lakh annual units but the current production is 70000 units of Micra compact car. In addition to Nissan Teana, Nissan imports X-Trail small utility vehicle and the sports version 370Z as CBUs from its apex company. The excise and customs duty of 60% is applicable for imported vehicles with 1500 cc engine capacity. Apart from this the car maker has to pay education and automobile cess, countervailing tax thereby making the net taxes to exceed 100%.
The current edition of Nissan Teana has the engine capacity of 2500cc V6 petrol engine at Rs26lakhs in India. Whereas the SKD and CKD units are levied just 10% - 25% tax value. This makes the Nissan Teana most expensive and the whooping tax range affecting the growth of Teana, he remarked. In all these three years of its launch, Nissan Teana has reached just 764 owners in domestic market of which the sale in November this year is 179 units, against 207 units during the last fiscal. However, Nissan has devised plans to launch 12 models in another 15-18 months making the target of 1 lakh units a year. The company intends to manufacture 5 models within India and four from its apex unit in Japan. To crown it all, there will be a global sedan to be made from Chennai in second half of 2011, followed by NV200 MUV in the subsequent year.
