Ford Enters Small Car Battle With New Model
Ford has signed an agreement with the Gujarat government on building a new manufacturing plant in Sanand, next to the Tata Nano plant. Ford Motor has said this new plant could develop in to a new export hub.
Ford's new small car is expected to hit Indian roads by 2014 with a price tag between Rs.3 lakhs and Rs.4 lakhs. It will be positioned below Ford's current entry level small car, the Figo. Ford India's spokesperson is quoted to have said: “"Ford India has announced bringing eight new products by mid-decade that customers want and desire. We recently launched the global Fiesta, first of the eight new products, which is generating great interest. We have not made any specific announcements of future products to be manufactured from our new or current manufacturing sites."
Sources indicate this new small car is being designed at Ford's Brazil unit and the carmaker has already approached Indian part makers to begin local production of parts. This new car will be one of the eighth cars to be launched by Ford in India in the next few years. Ford has developed an all new platform for this car. This platform will most likely help in the creation of new small cars.
Ford is very confident that this new small car will increase its sales manifold. The Fogo was instrumental in tripling Ford's annual sales. This new small car will not only be sold in India but also be exported to other Asian countries.
