The sale volume for the German car maker BMW in March 2011 stood at the highest ever in its Indian presence - 1027 units. The company is contemplating on increase of the production and a decision will be available during May.

The company"s President for India said there has been a huge demand for luxury cars in India and it did not make him surprise with the sale volume in March as he has been for more in April. The sale figure for March 2011 indicated a growth of 69.75% against 605 units in the same month of 2010. Incidentally this bettered the earlier top volume achieved in December 2010 - 901 units. He said there has been no panic to meet the production for this sale volume as the existing capacity is 10000 annual units on a single shift. He said the Chennai facility has the flexibility to meet any demand for production and if needed it would have the second shift.

A decision on the launch of the second shift will be taken in a month , he added. He could not make the exact number of the increased capacity in the Chennai facility on two shifts. Only last month the company increased the capacity in the Chennai facility to 10000 units which was 8000 units a year. The feat of reaching this mark of 1000 units in a single month made the company to be the first luxury car maker to do so.

By being the market leader, he added, the company will easily retain the position in coming years too. The sale volume for the competitors, Audi and Mercedes-Benz too stood at the best ever figures in March2011 with Mercedes achieving a 89.32% rise with 833 units and Audi clocked the figure of 681 units making the rise to three fold.
