Range Rover Sport Sets Pikes Peak HillClimb Record
The 2014 Range Rover Sport has become the fastest unmodified production SUV to climb Pikes Peak. In the process the Range Rover Sport also became the fastest unmodified production vehicle ever to reach the top of the mountain.
The new Range Rover Sport completed the 12.42 mile (19.98km) long course in 12 minutes 35.61 seconds. The average speed reached by the vehicle was 59.17 mph (95.23 km/h). The record attempt was verified and approved by Pikes Peak International Hill Climb organizers.
The Pikes Peak course consists of 156 corners, which includes dozens of hairpin bends. The start line is at an altitude of 2,860 m and vehicles ascend to a height of 4,300m to reach the finish line. At this height the air only has 58% oxygen, which reduces engine performance and diminishes human physical ability.
The new Range Rover Sport is powered by a 510 HP, 5.0 liter supercharged V8 engine. The only changes made to SUV were the inclusion of a roll cage and racing harness to meet safety standards. The Range Rover Sport was driven by 45 year old professional stunt and racing driver Paul Dallenbach, who already has six Hill Climb titles under his belt.
