Madras Motor Race Track Upgraded To Host Formula 2 & MotoGP
After the series of disheartening developments that hit the Indian motorsports community, in the form of cancellation of two scheduled international races at the Buddh International circuits, mercifully, there is now some good news. Madras Motor Race Track has been revamped to comply with FIA Grade 2 race track standard, reports AutoCarIndia.
India's first professional race track, the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT), also known as Irungattukottai Race Track, near Chennai, came up in 1986. The 3.7 km race track has been reason behind bringing Indian motorsports to the international front, by acting as the training ground for the likes of Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok.

MMRT, previously 3.7 long, now measures 3.9 km overall and will consist of two independent circuits. The ‘East' and ‘West' circuits will have a length of 1.99 km and 1.87 km respectively and include their own pit garages and paddocks. One of the important highlight of the upgraded circuit is the 800m straight, with a new start-finish line.
By obtaining FIA Grade 2 status MMRT is now certified to host Formula 2 car races. In addition, the track also confers to FIM norms, which permits it to host MotoGP. The main track has been provided with new pit garages and hospitality and media center. The garages have been designed on the same lines as the Dubai Autodrome circuit.

India now has two racing facilities capable of hosting international racing events. This will prove to be a boon to the budding racing community in the country and will help nurture future stars.
