Renault-Nissan Working On Alto 800 Competitor

By Ganesh

With the launch of Datsun Go Nissan opened its portfolio of low cost cars meant for emerging markets such as India. But the Go is only the tip of the iceberg as the Renault-Nissan has huge (small car) plans for India which will be revealed through the next three years.

Nissan had earlier confirmed that a total of 10 new cars would be introduced in India by the year 2016, including 3 wearing the Datsun badge. In addition, Renault will join its Japanese partner in introducing its own set of budget cars, either rebadged models or brand new ones.

Another update concerning the small car onslaught the Renault-Nissan Alliance has come from Wall Street Journal, which has received a formal confirmation about an 800cc engine being developed in the Chennai R&D center. This India specific 0.8 liter petrol unit will power a super mini that will be a direct competitor to Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon.

At the center of it all is the CMF-A programme being developed by the Alliance. CMF-A, which stands for Common Module Family is a new modular system made up of five independent modules - engine bay, cockpit, front underbody, rear underbody and electrical & electronic systems. These modules can be configured in various different forms, with each one resulting in a slightly different car model. In the coming years get ready for a barrage of compact and budget cars from the French-Japanese duo.
