Suzuki is said to be developing a new range of diesel engines. These will be the Japanese automaker's first ever self developed diesel powerplants, which makes it a very important development in Suzuki's history.

Currently, Suzuki relies on Fiat to provide it with diesel engines. The Fiat MultiJet engine powers Maruti Suzuki's entire diesel fleet, from Swift hatchback to DZire compact sedan to the Ertiga MPV. Suzuki seeks to put an end to its dependency on other manufacturers, which is a primary reason behind the development of the new diesel powerplants.

AutoCar reports that the first in the new line of Suzuki diesel engines will be a 800cc, two cylinder unit. Acting as a test bed for the new diesel engine will be a new pickup truck that we only know by its codename, Y9T.
The new pickup truck, powered by the new 800cc diesel engine will be launched only in 2015. The reason behind the choice of vehicle for the new engine is, Suzuki wants to smooth out any problems it might encounter with the engine before it is fitted in a passenger vehicle. Once it's satisfied with the engine's performance it will be used to power a whole range of compact hatchbacks and compact sedans.
The sub-1 liter diesel unit will be followed by a 1.5 liter, four cylinder diesel. This 1.5 liter engine will actually be developed by joining two 800cc engines, that will be downsized by 0.1 liter to avail tax benefits.
The 1.5 liter diesel from Suzuki will make its debut only in 2016, when it will appear for the first time inside a compact SUV specifically developed for India. The compact SUV will likely be based on XA Alpha concept, but as of now its recognised by its code-name YBA.
Suzuki's new diesel engines are still more than a year away and it will be long before the entire range starts utilising them. But upon their introduction Maruti Suzuki vehicles can be expected to become more fuel efficient, besides freeing up the automaker to pursue independent goals.
