Tata Motors New Car To Challenge Maruti, Ford
Tata Motors, the largest vehicle manufacturer of India, is reportedly developing a new premium small car that will be competing against successful models from Maruti Suzuki and Ford. The new car could be built on the Indica platform and is being developed under the project name X0.
This new premium small car is expected to be the biggest launch from Tata Motors in 2015. The car is said to be a result of new Tata Motors managing director Karl Slym's plans to introduce a contemporary and youthful vehicle.
Reports say Tata Motors chose to use the Indica platform considering the low cost of development. The platform will not be visible to users and more than 75% of the body panels will be different. The Tata X0 will be new car with an old foundation.
The Tata X0 is expected to be available with both petrol and diesel engines. The diesel engine will most likely be the 1.05 litre three cylinder version available with Tata and the petrol variant will get a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Tata Motors could add more potent engines to increase variety.
The new premium small car is a result of Tata Motors deciding to Spend INR 4,000 to 5,000 crores on new product development in the next three to five years. Top management members of Tata Motors are already discussing about the planning and designs of new products. The first among them will be the Tata X0.
The Tata X0 will also contend with competition from the upcoming Hyundai BA too. Tata Motors is also said to be developing a new compact sedan and a compact SUV. It is yet unclear which platform it will be using to develop these two new cars. But it is clear that Tata Motors has been attracted to the fast growing compact sedan and compact SUV segments.
New models are very essential for Tata Motors to bounce back following a sharp drop in sales and market share. As of now it does not have competitive cars that can truly challenge segment leaders.
