Tata Motors To Develop Its Own Advanced Modular Platform
Tata Motors has major plans to develop its very own modular platform, called Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) that will support its future vehicle lineup post 2015. This was confirmed by Dr Tim Leverton, R&D Chief at Tata Motors, to Australian site Motoring.
The Indian auto major is years behind when it comes to use of modern technology compared to major international automobile manufacturers, namely, Toyota, VW, GM, Hyundai etc,. all of whom use modular platforms of their own. VW's MLB and MQB platforms, Renault-Nissan's CMF and MFA platform that Mercedes-Benz uses, for example.

Modular platforms are vehicle platforms that can be modified to fit different sorts of vehicles simply by stretching or shrinking a common design and structure. The obvious advantage of this being monetary savings. It also speeds of production and development.
Tata Motors' AMP will be a monocoque architecture that will support its hatchbacks, sedans and compact SUVs. For its full size SUVs and pickup trucks a common body-on-ladder chassis will be used. Eventually, Tata's existing models will transition from their existing platforms to the common AMP.
When AMP starts going into production Tata Motors will become the first Indian automobile manufacturer to make use of a modular platform.
