Truck Racing In India By Tata Motors From 2014?
Formula 1 may not return to India next year. However, motorsports fans in India will be excited when they'll learn Tata Motors is looking to bring truck racing to India. And if all goes well, we could have our very first truck racing championship as early as March 2014.
The revelation comes courtesy of Vicky Chandhok, President, Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India (FMSCI). Speaking to IndiaToday, Chandhok revealed that the Tata Motors organised truck racing will take place in the only track in the country which can handle these massive vehicles, Buddh International Circuit.
While a formal announcement is expected soon, preparations have been going on for an year and a half. Tata has already modified 12 of its Prima heavy haulers and testing was conducted in Jamshedpur last month with satisfactory results.
Tata Motors plans to hold a single round in its inaugural year, which will be turned into a multi-build series in the next three years depending on the response.
The race will consist of a 12 truck grid, with experienced national and international drivers behind the wheels. The truck themselves come with race spec modifications such as a full roll cage, fire extinguisher, race spec fuel tank, brake coolers, bucket seats with five point racing harness etc,. Racing trucks are always six wheeled vehicles and minus their load carrying trailers.
Truck racing is a major attraction in the States and Europe where FIA approved events such as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (pickup trucks) and other heavy truck competitions are held.
