Volvo V60 With Foldable Solar Panel To Be Revealed

By Ganesh

In September this year in Rome people will get to see, perhaps, the weirdest (in an alien and good looking way) looking solar panel seen till date. That particular solar panel will be seen powering a Volvo V60 Hybrid electric car.

The Pure Tension Pavilion is the work of Synthesis Design + Architecture, Buro Happold, and Fabric Images. It was the winner of the 2013 Switch to Pure Volvo Pavilion Design Competition and hence has since been funded by Volvo Italy. Like the name says, the foldable solar panel (seen in the image) is a pavilion, the sort that you see erected in exhibitions.

Pure Tension Pavilion

This lightweight pavilion is made from HDPE Mesh Skin under tension and it is held in place by a carbon fiber skeleton. What makes it a solar panel are the photovoltaic panels embedded into it. The pavillion, when erected, either indoors or outdoors, collects light energy available and charges the vehicles battery (in this case, the Volvo V60 hybrid crossover). The pavillion can easily be folded up and loaded inside the car's trunk.

While Pure Tension Pavilion is only a concept now it is not hard to think of it or something similar powering our hybrid and electric cars in the near future. Since it is also a pavilion it will also be perfectly useful during touring, simultaneously providing shelter and charging up the car. As radical and unconventional it might seem now our future could very well have strange things like this in store for us.
