Tata Motors’ New Turbo Petrol Engine Details Revealed

By now it is well known that Tata Motors will be launching two new updated models at the Auto Expo 2014 next month. Known only by their codename ‘Falcon' these two new vehicles are the next generation Vista and Manza.

The new vehicles will also sport a brand new engine, which Tata Motors has developed inhouse. A 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol unit. The first details about the new engine have now been leaked and you might be interested to know that Tata Motors is said to have developed the engine with the intent of improving fuel economy.

According to the source of the story, the upcoming turbo 1.2 liter petrol engine will only be capable of generating 80 bhp, which is a disappointment, especially considering other manufacturers offer naturally aspirated engines with similar displacement that generate more power.

But like we said before, Tata Motors is less bothered about performance and more about increasing mileage and improving drivability.

The 1.2 turbo petrol engine's design is an overall improvement over Tata Motors' earlier engines, with improved balance, stiffness and a lower weight. The engine's all new cylinder head will come with a two valve per cylinder design, but a four valve head is also said to be under development.

Last, but not the least, the engine will be mated to the company's existing TA65 transmission, but improvements have been made on this front as well to make gear shifts smoother.

The upcoming 1.2 liter turbo petrol engine will be the first in a family of engines that the company plans to develop. Eventually, there will be larger displacement units and engines with direct fuel injection.
