US Fines BMW $40 Million For Violating US Recall Standards

German carmaker BMW has been fined $40 million by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for not recalling vehicles in time that have failed crash tests. The carmaker has acknowledged the violation of US recall standards while the Mini Cooper failed the crash tests in 2014 and 2015.

BMW was fined $3 million for a similar violation back in 2012 by the NHTSA.

The agency has ordered BMW to spend $10 million as cash penalties, another $10 million to implement improvements such as appointing an independent consultant to develop best practices, and $20 million in deferred penalties, if BMW fails to comply with the order.

Mark Rosekind, the NHTSA administrator said, "For the second time in three years, BMW has been penalized for failing to meet that obligation. The company must take this opportunity to reform its procedures and its culture to put safety where it belongs: at the top of its priority list."
