BMW Might Replace The Traditional Car Key With Mobile Phone App
BMW is evaluating the use of a physical car key and could replace it with a mobile phone app.
German luxury carmaker BMW is evaluating the need for car keys, Ian Robertson, the company's board member responsible for sales, told Reuters.
The reason for replacing the car keys by BMW is because the company says that customers now carry a smartphone and the availability of a BMW App which allows customers to unlock their vehicle without the need of physical car key.
"Honestly, how many people really need it," Robertson said in an interview at the 2017 Frankfurt car show, telling that customers no longer had to put the key in the ignition to make the car start.
"They never take it out of their pocket, so why do I need to carry it around? " Robertson said, adding that the company was studying at getting rid of keys altogether.
"We are looking at whether it is feasible, and whether we can do it. Whether we do it right now or at some point in the future, remains to be seen," Robertson said.

Most of the car makers are doing away with the traditional car keys and brands such as Tesla, which is using a key card and mobile app instead to unlock and start its new Model 3. With mobile phone becoming a part of everyone, the move by BMW to have a mobile phone app open your car is a commendable approach by the Bavarian company.
