End Of Road For The Popular Fiat 1.3-Litre MultiJet Diesel Engine
Fiat 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine to be discontinued from 2020.
Fiat's popular 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine which currently powers cars such as Maruti Swift, Dzire, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza and Tata Zest, Bolt as well as Fiat Punto, Linea among others will be discontinued from 2020.
India will move to Bharat Stage VI (BSVI) emission regulations by 2020; as per Autocar India, the Fiat 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine will be discontinued as there are no plans to upgrade the unit to comply with the new emission regulations.
Fiat's largest customer for the 1.3-litre MultiJet engine and Tata Motors switching to their in-house developed BS-VI complaint diesel units, there won't be any demand for this engine. With Maruti and Tata Motors no more customers of the famed Fiat diesel engine and with Fiat's depleting car sales in India, the company will discontinue the unit.

Maruti Suzuki has been extensively developing its own diesel engine to power its cars. It is reported that Maruti will offer the new 1.5-litre diesel engine in the next-generation Ciaz sedan. However, the upcoming next-generation Maruti Swift will continue to be powered by the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine just like the current Dzire model.
Tata Motors has already revealed that its upcoming Nexon compact SUV will be powered by its in-house developed 1.5-litre Revotroq diesel unit. The Fiat 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine powered nearly 24 cars from five different carmakers, and it sold more than 3 million units. It is also being said that this engine was powering nearly 16 cars concurrently.

The Fiat 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine is frugal and performed well in all cars that it powered. That said, we have to move towards a cleaner environment and diesel engines is among the powertrains which emit more pollution than other engines.
