Honda Reveals Its Self-Driving Technology Plans

Honda self-driving technology plan was announced and showcased it's automated vehicle technologies in several complex driving scenarios, including systems with advanced artificial intelligence (AI).

Autonomous or self-driving technology has received unprecedented importance in the last decade. Nearly every automaker has outlined their strategy to be among the first autonomous systems to hit the roads.

The Japanese automaker, Honda, one of the largest automakers in the world, has been a cautious automaker when it comes to self-driving cars. At a recent announcement, Honda shared its plans for its self-driving car.

Honda Self-Driving Car Plans Revealed; To Receive Level 4 Automation

The company has targetted 2025 to introduce vehicles with highly-automated driving capability in most driving situations internally called SAE Level 4. These are just the first steps in Honda's aim to reduce traffic collisions by 2040.

This plan builds upon earlier-announced plans for Honda and Acura vehicles to have highly-automated freeway driving capability (SAE Level 3) by 2020.

The announcement was made by President & CEO Takahiro Hachigo, Honda Motor Company. He said, "We will strive to achieve the technological establishment of Level 4 automated driving for personal car use by around 2025,"

He added, "We are striving to provide our customers with a sense of confidence and trust by offering automated driving that will keep vehicles away from any dangerous situation, and that will not make people around the vehicle feel unsafe."

In the second driving scenario, Honda showed simulating a standard urban driving experience, was conducted using the latest generation of Honda artificial intelligence (AI) with Deep Learning capability.

With no LIDAR or GPS, but equipped with camera sensors only, Honda's AI with Deep Learning can sense and respond to complex driving environments and situations, such as roads without proper lane markings.

The system can detect pedestrians and bicyclists at night with only partial visibility, and through the accumulation of experience, using advanced AI as well, where the system can improve its ability to predict an outcome and take appropriate action.

The SAE defines self-driving based on six levels of capability, from zero to five. The SAE Level 4 or "high automation" means the car can handle all driving tasks in most driving situations, with possible exceptions such as inclement weather conditions or unusual driving environments, where the driver would be required to resume control.

Through Honda's Sensing and AcuraWatch suite of features, the company is quickly advancing its deployment of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies in Honda and Acura vehicles on the road today.

Close to a half-million Honda and Acura vehicles on the U.S. roads today are equipped with these technologies such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) via the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

Honda Sensing was first offered on the 2015 Honda CR-V and has since been used on the Honda Civic, Pilot SUV, Ridgeline pickup and the recently launched 2018 Odyssey minivan. AcuraWatchTM was first offered on the 2015 Acura RL Sedan and is now available on the RDX five-passenger SUV and standard on the MDX three-row SUV and 2018 Acura TLX sedan.

Approximately one-third of new Honda models sold are now equipped with Honda Sensing, claims the company. Also, over 70 percent of Acura sales are of vehicles outfitted with AcuraWatch.
