How Good Are The Headlights On Your SUVs?
Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed the headlight rating for several mid-sized SUVs.
If you think the headlights on your SUVs are excellent, then probably they are not. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed the headlight rating for several SUVs.
Although the headlights are improving in new vehicles, IIHS states that many SUVs needs better headlights. IIHS tested 19 midsize SUVs and 18 midsize luxury SUVs.
The test results revealed that only the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2017 Volvo XC60 are offered with good-rated headlights. 12 SUVs were equipped with headlights of acceptable rating. The 23 other SUVs are offered with marginal or poor-rated headlights.
The SUVs with poor-rated headlights are - Infiniti QX60, Lincoln MKC, Lincoln MKX, Dodge Journey, Ford Edge, Ford Explorer, GMC Terrain, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Jeep Wrangler, Kia Sorento, and Toyota 4Runner.
The SUVs which received acceptable ratings for the headlights included Acura MDX, Acura RDX, BMW X5, Buick Envision, Infiniti QX70, Lexus NX, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Honda Pilot, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Toyota Highlander.
2018 Audi Q5, BMW X3, Cadillac XT5, Infiniti QX50, Lincoln MKT, Volvo XC90, 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Durango, Ford Flex, GMC Acadia, Nissan Murano, and Nissan Pathfinder received marginal ratings.
IIHS Senior Research Engineer, Matt Brumbelow said, "As a group, midsize SUV headlights perform slightly better than the other SUVs and pickups we evaluated last year, and that's encouraging."

With the latest technology, it is hard to believe that most of the SUVs are equipped with the under-rated headlights. Visibility at night is critical, and the manufacturers need to throw some light to brighten up the headlights.
