The design of the Compass has taken obvious inspiration from the Jeep's flagship - the Grand Cherokee, and features the typical Jeep highlights such as the seven-slat grille and the straight butch looks.

Each slot in the grille is finished in gloss black and has chrome surrounds. The projector headlamps with LED DRLs (daytime running lights) looks simple, but add character to the front end of the car. The front bumper features a large air dam which is flanked by the fog lamps.

The side profile of the car has neat character lines with the trapezoidal wheel arches hosting the 16-inch alloy wheels shod with tyres from Firestone. a chrome roofline running across the entire length of the sloping roof, ending at the rear, above the LED tail lamps. The tail lamps along with the large Jeep and 4x4 badges characterise the rear end of the SUV.

Inside the Jeep Compass, one is greeted by a contrasting dual-tone theme. The dashboard is finished in Black, while the seats and roof are finished in an off-white colour Jeep calls Ski-Grey. The seats offer good thigh support, with more than enough head and knee room. The centre armrest in the rear seat has twin cup holders inbuilt.

The 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, bluetooth audio streaming, USB, AUX input etc. It does not feature Navigation, but does feature an actual Compass.
Other features include dual-zone air conditioning, push-button ignition, keyless entry and auto folding ORVMs (outer rear view mirrors). The control dial for Jeep's Selec-Terrain all-wheel-drive system placed ahead of the gear lever looks and feels nice. More on that later.

The Jeep Compass has been made available in the Indian market with two engine options. Powering the diesel variant is a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit putting out a maximum power of 171 bhp and a peak torque figure of 350Nm. The petrol-powered variant uses a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit with a maximum power output of 160bhp and a peak torque output of 250Nm.
Drive is sent to the wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox on the diesel variant while the petrol variant gets a 7-speed DDCT automatic gearbox. The Limited 4x4 variant is equipped with Jeep's Selec-Terrain all-wheel-drive system which has four drive modes - Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud - which then sets up the Compass' engine and traction control for the selected terrain.

On our first drive review of the Jeep Compass, we found that the 2.0-litre MultiJet II Diesel engine has significant turbo lag under 1,800rpm but has linear power delivery past that mark, all the way up to 4,000rpm. Also, the 6-speed manual gearbox on the diesel powered variant is just a little lethargic while in pursuit of quick downshifts.
The Jeep Compass rides and handles well, with the McPherson struts up front from Koni and the Chapman link setup at the rear. This setup allows minimal body roll. The Jeep compass has a ground clearance of 178mm and a water fording capability of upto 480mm.

Jeep seems to have taken safety very seriously with the Compass, offering it in six airbags with dual-stage activation, Traction Control system, ESP (Electronic Stability Control), and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution).
Other features of the Jeep Compass include Passive entry and keyless go, engine start/stop button, reverse park assist sensors, dual-zone climate control, electronic parking brake, etc.

Jeep has brought in FCA's sub-brand Mopar to offer insurance, maintenance, servicing, etc. with a 3-year complimentary roadside assistance. The Compass has received over 5,000 bookings and more than 38,000 interested customers in just 40 days.
Deliveries of the diesel-powered variants will begin almost immediately, but deliveries of the petrol-powered vehicles only in the festive season.

The Jeep Compass is available in five colours - Hydro Blue, Exotica Red, Brilliant Black, Vocal White, Minimal Grey.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The Jeep Compass offers unrivalled pedigree and equipment for that price. And, going by the number of bookings already received, the Jeep Compass does seem to have taken the Indian market by storm. As Jeep's commercial advertorial claims, the Jeep Compass might just rewrite Indian legends.
