Steer-By-Wire — Is The Steering Wheel Being Reinvented?
JTEKT Corp., the world’s biggest steering supplier is planning to introduce steer-by-wire system for steering wheels.
Japan's JTEKT Corp., the world's biggest steering supplier and the 15th among top 100 global supplier is looking at reinventing the steering wheel. This comes at a time when autonomous tech will steer cars by itself, without the need of human hands or intervention.

Tetsuo Agata, the President of JTEKT has two options — redundancy systems and steer-by-wire technologies. The company expects to start rolling out new products in the next few years as automobile manufacturers are moving towards semi-autonomous vehicles.

Redundancy will improve safety, since these systems are the essential fail-safe backups that intervene to steer an autonomous car if the main system malfunctions. The system will ensure the car can drive on its own, while the driver relaxes.

The steer-by-wire mechanism eliminates direct mechanical linkages. This system will convert steering wheel movement to electronic signals that will in turn control electric motors to guide the wheel. Autonomous cars don't require steer-by-wire steering to function but will benefit from it.

Agata says, "Manufacturers don't like a mechanical steering linkage because it takes away the freedom of design. It occupies a very important portion of the car. It occupies prime real estate."

If autonomous tech does not interest you like a regular car, then the Pagani Huayra Roadster pictured below might interest you.
