Lightyear — The Street-Legal Solar Car Teased

A group of engineering students has come up with a new startup company to produce a street-legal solar car, called as Lightyear.

A group of students from the Technical University of Eindhoven (Netherlands) has come up with a new startup company to produce a street-legal solar car.

It is impossible to charge an electric vehicle using solar energy. The reason is, there is not enough space to install solar cell to supply power to move the car which weighs over a tonne.

But the group of students known as Solar Team Eindhoven designed a prototype solar car named as Stella Lux. The car was extremely aerodynamic, and carbon fibre and aluminium were used to reduce weight.

The Stella Lux was built for a student competition, manufacturing a street-legal solar car which can be commercially sold is a whole new challenge. The car needs to have several safety features. At the same time, the vehicle should be practical for day-to-day use.

All the features add up to the weight of the car. And more the weight, more solar cells will be required to power the car. Lightyear thinks that they have found a perfect balance. The startup company claims that they have created an electric car which charges by itself.

Lightyear states that the car will have enough power to travel around 10,000km to 20,000 per year depending on the climate. They are aiming to start a small production of ten cars by 2019 and then produce 100 cars in 2020.

DriveSpark Thinks!

When several automakers around the world are developing electric cars, a group of engineering students have gone a step ahead to develop a solar car. If the Lightyear car is practical and viable, then it will be a game changer in the automobile industry.
