Self-Driving Cars To Become Cheaper By 2025 — What Is Happening To Driver’s Cars!
Autonomous cars could get a price drop of almost 90% by 2025 says Delphi CEO. Here’s what you need to know about self-driving cars.
Kevin Clark, CEO of Delphi Automotive (Soon to change their name to Aptiv), says they want to cut the cost of self-driving/autonomous/driverless cars to around $5000 (Rs. 3.2 lakh) by 2025.
Aptive wants to help automotive manufacturers to strategically plan the way automobiles are engineered, so as to make money on autonomous cars. The company is currently trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the stock, APTV.

Delphi Technologies, a spinout of the company, will concentrate on traditional engine components, while Aptiv focusses on self-driving and other technologies. All of this depends on the end of the stock exchange on 11th December 2017.

The current prices of Autonomous cars range from $70,000 to $150,000, or Rs. 45 lakh to Rs. 97 lakh. As per Kevin Clark, the cost-cutting starts at the moment Automotive brands start working with technology firms like Aptive themselves. This would help the brands to update the existing chassis to accommodate electric motors, batteries and sensors.

The complexity of the software involved depends on the feedback of the end user of such autonomous cars. The company will also invest in firms and startups capable of performing data collection and analysis of driverless cars.

The new Audi A8 is currently the most advanced ‘mass-production' car with autonomous driving capability. The ‘Level 3 Autonomy' is so advanced that its full potential is illegal in most countries.

It is to be noted that the delay for the price-cut to happen, is mainly due to the high cost and niche sale of autonomous cars in the market, presently. The start of this, however, depends on how Aptive's stocks perform in the market.

Autonomous cars will be a definite part of the future. If advanced efficiently, it can reduce road accidents, offer hassle-free traffic and can make our lives a bit easier. However, at the end, cars are always meant to be driven.
