Express Highway Speed Limit In India Raised — New Speed Limit For Car Stands At 120km/h
Express highway speed limit for various vehicle categories increased. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in a recent amendment, raised the express highway speed limit from 100km/h to 120km/h. This speeds limit is for M1 category vehicles which do not have more than eight seats. M2 and M3 category vehicles (commercial and cargo) have lesser limits.
The government had earlier shared that they were planning to revise the speed limits on Indian roads. Now, the speed limits of all vehicle categories have been raised by 10km/h to 20km/h. This applies to various roads too.
While passenger cars can go at 120km/h on express highways, taxis or cabs can only go at 100km/h. Express highway speed limits of cabs were earlier set at 80km/h.

The 100km/h speed limit for express highways also apply to commercial vehicles such as vans, buses and tempos.
Meanwhile, speed limits on regular highways for passenger cars stay at 100km/h (higher by 20km/h). Cabs can go at 90km/h now, as opposed to 80km/h like before.
Within city limits, all cars (including taxis) can go at 70km/h. Local authorities can also implement lower speed limits at places such as religious centres, schools and narrow sections.
For motorcycles, the express and regular highway speed limit is set at 80km/h. In cities and townships, you can't ride a motorcycle above 60km/h. This is much better than the previous 40km/h city speed limit.
Three-wheelers and quadricycles are strictly restricted to go over 50km/h in the city.
Most cabs and commercial vehicles have to have a speed governor while on service. Current governors limit the vehicles to speeds as per the old rule. Now, since the speed limits have been raised by the government, these governors have to be either replaced or reprogrammed.
The ministry has also confirmed that no action will be taken if individuals exceed the speed limit by five percent. This is in accordance with section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1998.
In the case of express highway speed limits, the local authorities have the right to implement lesser speed limits if a need arises. This applies to sections passing through forests, villages or bad terrain conditions.
Thoughts On The New Express Highway Speed Limits
The revised speed limits on express highways and other roads are a welcome change. Most passenger cars can go over 100km/h with ease. Anything with a 100 unit mark, as per studies, is something people would always try to attain or exceed, even if it is suggested not to do so. Since the new express highway speed limit stands at 120km/h, cars can be driven fast enough. The new amendment also allows local authorities to put regional speed limits, which will also prove helpful.
