Mahindra Thar 5-Door Launch In 2023 – All We Know So Far
The second-generation Mahindra Thar SUV has been a runaway success for Mahindra in India and the demand for the off-road SUV continues to be high.
While the Mahindra Thar has improved a lot over its predecessor, the SUV still has a major weakness considering it could only seat 4 adults and barely fit their luggage. As such, Mahindra has been developing the Thar 5-door for quite some time and it will soon hit the Indian roads.
Moreover, the Mahindra Thar 5-door test mules have been spotted numerous times testing with heavy camouflage. However, as reported by many, the 5-door variant of the Mahindra Thar will not be based on the outgoing version of the Thar SUV. Instead, the upcoming 5-door variant of the Mahindra Thar will be based on the recently launched Scorpio-N platform.
Thanks to this new platform, we expect the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV to be a lot more spacious and safer as well. Apart from that, this valuable piece of information was previously confirmed by R Velusamy, Mahindra Senior VP & Head of Automotive Product Development.
Thanks to the Scorpio N platform being used in the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV, we expect the driving dynamics of the Thar 5-door to be very similar to the Scorpio N SUV. Apart from that, the 5-door iteration of the Mahindra Thar SUV is expected to be a bit more feature-rich as well.
In terms of powertrain options, we expect the upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar SUV to sport the same engine options as Scorpio N SUV. This means the Thar 5-door SUV is likely to be offered with both the 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine and the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine.
Diving into details, the petrol engine is a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder unit with 200bhp of peak power and 370Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine produces 172.5bhp of peak power and 400Nm of peak torque. However, Mahindra could detune the engine to suit the character of the Thar 5-door SUV.
Additionally, we expect Mahindra to offer the upcoming Thar 5-Door with both manual and automatic transmission options as well. It is also worth mentioning that the upcoming Thar 5-door SUV is likely to be offered with locking differentials as standard on the top-spec variant to justify the premium pricing and mechanically differentiate the model from Scorpio N 4WD.
Thoughts About The Upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-Door
The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door variant could become another success story for Mahindra and may even become one of the best-selling models in Mahindra's history. However, we are not sure how Mahindra will handle the production, given the waiting period for the XUV700 and newly launched Mahindra Scorpio N SUVs extend up to 2 years for some variants.
