The New Mercedes-AMG GT2 Pro Is A Beastly Track Day Special

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the GT2 Pro, the latest and most powerful edition in its GT series of sports cars. Based on the original GT and described as a "non-homologated race car for track days," the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Pro is designed for thrill-seekers who want a properly mad track toy.

The GT2 Pro is built on the same platform as the GT2 race car, which has already proven itself in the GT2 European Series. Mercedes-AMG has ensured that the GT2 Pro can be easily downgraded to the homologated GT2 version for racing events. The GT2 Pro is eligible for the Mercedes-AMG Racing Series.

So what's so Pro compared to the actual GT2 race car? Well, the biggest change comes in the upgraded engine output. The GT2 Pro is powered by the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine as the GT2, but with power output cranked up to 760bhp from the GT2's 697bhp, and torque standing at a chunky 800Nm.

While the standard power level remains unchanged, owners can access the extra power on tap in the GT2 Pro by engaging the 'Push2Pass' button on the steering wheel, which raises the power to 760bhp for short bursts of time.

Power is sent through a sequential six-speed racing gearbox. The gear ratios have been modified compared to the GT2 car. The transmission is mounted at the rear for better weight distribution and is connected to the engine via a carbon fibre torque tube.

The GT2 Pro features aluminium double wishbone suspension at both the front and rear, adjustable anti-roll bars, and four-way shock absorbers.

In terms of design, the GT2 Pro shares the GT2's aggressive aerodynamic package, including the extended front lip, aggressive diffuser and massive swan-neck rear wing with larger endplates. The bonnet sports vents to help keep the engine cool and there is ducting for the brakes as well. The 18-inch centre-lock wheels will be offered exclusively with the GT2 Pro.

Inside, the GT2 Pro is all business with a stripped-out cabin and a single carbon-fibre bucket seat. The centre console and dashboard play host to an array of buttons and switches including those for the fire extinguisher system, engine cut-off, and fuel pump.

Racers will also benefit from safety features like a full-carbon safety cell, five-point race harnesses, the aforementioned fire extinguisher, safety nets and a hatch on the roof panel that can be opened in case an escape needs to be made that way.

The GT2 Pro comes with a hefty price tag, costing €479,000 (Rs 4.27 crore), which is €70,000 (Rs 62.4 lakh) more than the GT2. Owners will also receive a bespoke car cover and a fully personalised racing suit complete with a helmet, shoes, gloves and 'competition underwear'.

Thoughts About The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Pro

The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Pro is the ultimate track day machine from the German firm's resident nutters at Affalterbach. Despite its hefty price tag, for those seeking the ultimate three-pointed star-badged track day weapon, the GT2 Pro is worth every penny.
