Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance Revealed - The Most Powerful Drop-Top Merc Ever Made
Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance revealed. The all-new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance is the top-spec version of the new SL roadster and also the most powerful convertible car ever produced by Mercedes.
The new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance is based on the SL 63 S variant but adds a 200bhp electric motor to the mix that gives it supercar levels of performance. This powertrain has been seen earlier on Merc's AMG GT 63 S E Performance and S 63 S E Performance models.

The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged AMG M177 V8 engine remains unchanged from the SL 63 S and it produces 603bhp and 850Nm of peak torque. With the motor, which is bolted directly onto the rear axle added on the output from the SL 63 S E Performance rises to 804bhp and an earth-churning 1,420Nm of peak torque.
With the 9-speed automatic gearbox quickly shifting through the gears while sending power to all four wheels and the roadster primed in launch mode, the SL 63 S E Performance races from 0-100km/h in just 2.9 seconds.

Given enough time and a long stretch of the unlimited autobahn or a long straight on a race track, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance will hit a top speed of 317km/h. However, the peak performance of the hybrid SL roadster is only offered in temporary bursts, either on full throttle or if the car is in launch mode.
The electric motor of the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance is fed by a 6.1kWh battery pack that delivers an electric only range of 13 kilometres. The battery can charge and discharge quickly on the 400V electrical architecture to allow drivers to access full performance when needed.

A 3.7kW AC on-board charger is provided for those looking to charge the power-dense battery pack at home. The flap that hides the charging port is one of the few major design changes on the new E Performance roadster other than the red badging. The new top-spec SL also features four levels of regen.
The other major design changes come in the form of new 20 (front) and 21 (rear) wheels that are made for the E Performance version of the SL 63 S. Behind these snazzy alloys sit massive carbon-ceramic brakes - 420mm (front) and 380mm rear - that are clamped down by six-piston and single-piston callipers respectively.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance also features a few aero upgrades including a carbon-fibre splitter which can extend downward by 40mm and a ducktail spoiler that extends out. Both of these aero devices extend out at 80km/h. The new top-spec SL also features rear-wheel steering.
Thoughts About The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance is the craziest and most powerful drop-top car that the firm has ever produced. The hybrid powertrain ensures that the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance has enough performance to blow the toupees off the heads of many a mid-life crisis driver.
