2023 Munich Motor Show: Mercedes Concept CLA Class Unveiled
German luxury carmaker Mercedes has revealed the Concept CLA Class at the 2023 Munich Motor Show. The Mercedes Concept CLA Class gives us a look at what the next EQ EV from the German luxury firm will look like.
The production version of the Mercedes Concept CLA Class is currently out and about testing ahead of its expected debut next year. The production-spec Mercedes CLA Class EV will rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and the BMW 3 Series EV based on the Vision Neue Klasse.
This all-new Mercedes Concept CLA Class EV sits upon the German firm's new MMA platform which it claims will be used to underpin a total of four new models - a sporty four-door coupe (CLA), a shooting brake and two SUVs.
This brand-new MMA platform is derived directly from the electric system that powered the Vision EQXX. The MMA platform features an 800V electrical architecture combined with a battery with exceptional energy density and a highly efficient electric drive unit.
Mercedes claims that this new MMA setup in its most efficent mode can deliver a range of more than 750 kilometres on a single charge. The lithium-ion battery pack is offered in both LFP and NMC chemistries and can recoup 400km of range in 15 minutes when connected to a 250kW DC charger.
The external design of CLA Class does feature quite a few concepty bits but the production car is expected to feature only minimal changes. The front end sports a familiar grille with illuminated three-pointed stars surrounding the large badge in the centre.
Even the connected headlights (paired up by a lightbar that runs across the width of the bonnet), sport the three-pointed star logo. The coupe roof is mostly glass and the Concept CLA sports frameless doors as well as some snazzy wheels.
The roof slopes into a notchback style rear which sports a full-width lightbar connecting the LED taillights. The Mercedes badge at the rear is also illuminated as well.
The dashboard is lifted from the EQXX with the full-width display that runs across it. The other stuff is quite out there especially the semi-translucent steering wheel and wireless phone charger along with the slim seats, all three of which aren't expected to make production.
Thoughts About The Mercedes Concept CLA Class
The Mercedes Concept CLA Class gives us a glimpse at Merc's Tesla Model 3 rival. With a range expected to be as high as 750km on a single charge and 250kW DC fast charging, the new CLA may just be the sedan to take on the Tesla Model 3.
