ABB's Advanced Paint Atomization Technology Aids Mazda In Achieving Sustainability Targets

ABB has introduced its RB1000i-S paint atomizers at Mazda's Ujina plant in Japan. These atomizers are part of Mazda's strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. The new technology enhances paint transfer efficiency, reducing waste and emissions significantly.

The RB1000i-S atomizers have achieved up to 95-99% efficiency. This improvement reduces paint usage, energy consumption, and volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions. Joerg Reger from ABB Robotics highlighted the importance of this development for Mazda's sustainability goals.

Mazda reports that painting accounts for 60% of its manufacturing CO2 emissions. The company has seen a 17% reduction in paint usage, saving around 30,000 liters annually due to the improved efficiency of these atomizers.

Energy consumption and maintenance needs have also decreased with the new system. The RB1000i-S atomizers can be retrofitted to existing robots, supporting both carbon neutrality and the circular economy.

ABB offers an upgrade kit for existing RB1000i atomizers. This kit includes enhancements like a new bell cup and air shaping nozzle, improving performance and extending equipment life while minimizing downtime.

ABB aims to cover at least 80% of its product portfolio with its Circularity Approach by 2030. This commitment underscores ABB's dedication to sustainable solutions in various industries.
