American Honda Achieves Sales Growth Amid Nationwide Dealer Cyberattack

American Honda reported a 1.1% increase in June sales, reaching 112,742 units. Year-to-date (YTD) sales for the first half of 2023 rose by 9.3%. The Honda brand alone surpassed 100,000 units in June, marking a 4.1% rise for the month and over 12% for the year.

The CR-V model maintained its top-selling status with over 31,000 units sold for the fifth consecutive month. Notably, hybrid-electric versions accounted for 52% of June's CR-V sales. The HR-V also showed strong performance, with sales up by 22% in June to 11,110 units and nearly 40% growth in the second quarter.

Pilot sales exceeded 11,700 units in June, reflecting a 19% increase for the year. The Odyssey minivan approached 7,000 units sold in June, marking a 32% rise compared to the same month last year. The Prologue model saw June sales of 830 units, pushing its total to over 1,500 units after two months.

The Acura brand posted June sales of 10,357 units despite challenges from a software cyberattack affecting auto dealers nationwide. Second-quarter sales increased by 10.8% over the first quarter. Acura SUVs performed well with MDX topping 4,100 units and RDX exceeding 3,300 units.

The Integra model continued to lead as a gateway vehicle with over 2,000 units sold for the fifth straight month. This consistent performance has helped maintain Acura's momentum into the first half of 2024.

Year-to-Date Sales Overview

American Honda's YTD total reached over 690,281 units, showing a growth of 9.3%. Car sales contributed to this with an increase of 3.9%, while truck sales surged by 12.2%. In contrast, Acura's YTD total was down by 13.1%, with car sales dropping by 31.4% and truck sales decreasing by 3.1%.

In June alone, American Honda sold a total of 112,742 units with cars accounting for just over 37,000 and trucks making up more than double that amount at around 75,661 units.

Sales Highlights and Market Trends

Lance Woelfer, vice president of Auto Sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc., commented on the company's performance: "We are pleased to see our sales momentum continue through the second quarter despite the software cyberattack impacting auto dealers nationwide." He added that their flexible strategy of offering petrol-efficient models alongside hybrid-electric and EV options is meeting customer needs effectively.

The Civic and Accord models combined for over 34,000 units in June; notably, hybrid-electric versions made up half of Accord's sales. Additionally, Honda remains America's top seller of manual transmission vehicles this year.

Model-Specific Insights

The rugged Pilot TrailSport variant has driven a significant portion of Pilot’s year-to-date growth at a rate of about 19%. Meanwhile, Odyssey continues to lead minivan retail sales with nearly seven thousand units sold in June alone.

The refreshed Acura MDX model has also shown promise with enhanced styling and technology features contributing to its strong market presence.
