BMW I Ventures Announces Strategic Investment In Phoenix Tailings To Enhance Rare Earth Metal Processing In The U.S.
BMW i Ventures has announced its investment in Phoenix Tailings, a company focused on sustainable metals production. This Series B funding round, led by Envisioning Partners with participation from Yamaha Motor Ventures and Escape Velocity, aims to expand Phoenix Tailings' rare earth processing capabilities to produce approximately 200 tons annually. The company was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by four co-founders committed to transforming metal production.
Phoenix Tailings is at the forefront of refining rare earth metals in the U.S., crucial for manufacturing magnets used in various components. Their innovative process extracts these metals from traditional ores and non-traditional sources like recycled materials and mining waste, known as "tailings," without creating toxic byproducts. This method allows them to compete with traditional processes dominated by China and Russia.
The backing from BMW i Ventures will help Phoenix Tailings enhance its operations and contribute to a more sustainable future. Kasper Sage, Managing Partner at BMW i Ventures, stated, "Phoenix Tailings has made a breakthrough that will significantly advance the sustainable refining of rare earth elements - a crucial step forward as many clean energy technologies depend on these critical materials."
With support from the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense and the State of Massachusetts, Phoenix Tailings has secured initial agreements and validated its technology. The company plays a vital role in strengthening the U.S. supply chain for defense manufacturing while meeting commercial industry demands for essential materials.
Nick Myers, co-founder and CEO of Phoenix Tailings, highlighted the importance of their work: "As our reliance on advanced technology grows, so does our dependence on critical metals—particularly lesser-known materials like rare earth metals." He emphasized their significance across industries such as automotive, defense, and medical devices.
Phoenix Tailings ensures that the United States can meet increasing demand through ethical, sustainable, and economically viable processes. Their approach not only supports national security but also addresses environmental concerns associated with traditional metal extraction methods.
