Can Lowering Speed Limits Really Reduce Road Accidents? WHO Says Yes
In a recent workshop organized by the transport department and The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety in New Delhi, a significant study by the World Health Organization (WHO) was presented, shedding light on the critical impact of vehicle speed on road safety.
The findings indicated that a mere 5% reduction in the average speed of vehicles could lead to a dramatic decrease of up to 30% in fatal accidents, highlighting the importance of speed management in urban environments.

Urban Speed Limits and Pedestrian Safety
The study strongly recommends setting speed limits at 50kmph or lower in urban areas to enhance safety. It further suggests that in zones with a high presence of pedestrians, such as school vicinities, marketplaces, or residential sectors, the speed limit should be even more stringent, at 30kmph or below.
This guidance stems from the observation of the direct correlation between speed and the likelihood of crash involvements, with risks escalating exponentially as speed increases beyond the 60kmph threshold.

The Risks of Speeding
An alarming revelation from the study was the sharp rise in the risk of fatal crashes as vehicle speed climbs. In areas where the speed limit is set at 60kmph, doubling the speed to 120kmph significantly increases the danger, with the risk multiplying by up to 32 times at speeds of 75kmph.
These statistics were underlined by Brett Harman, Asia Pacific manager of Road Safety Projects at the Global Road Safety Partnership, who noted the trend, particularly in urban centers like Delhi, where higher speeds correlate with an increased risk of accidents.

The workshop also identified the primary risk factors contributing to road mishaps, including excessive speed, driving under the influence, incorrect helmet use, and failure to wear seat belts.
The study emphasized that correctly worn helmets can lower the odds of death by 40% and serious injuries by 70%, while seat belts can cut fatalities by half for occupants in both front and rear seats. These findings underscore the importance of not just the presence of safety gear but also its proper usage.

Enhancing Road Safety Awareness
Officials from the transport department highlighted the objective of the study as a tool for increasing public awareness about the preventable nature of many road incidents. The emphasis was on minor yet critical behaviors, such as the correct fastening of helmets, that could significantly mitigate injury risks. The department plans to complement awareness efforts with rigorous enforcement campaigns targeting non-compliance with road safety rules.
