Iconic Indian Cars – 1947 to 1962

Hindustan Motors (HML) was India's largest automobile company before Maruti Udyog (now Maruti Suzuki) emerged. Established in 1942, HML rolled out its first post-independence car, the Hindustan 10, in 1948. This model was based on the Morris 10 and featured a 37 bhp 1148 cc engine, which was quite advanced for its time.

Premier Auto Limited (PAL), founded in 1903, was HML's main competitor. PAL initially had a licence from Chrysler Corporation to build Plymouth and Dodge trucks. In 1949, PAL began assembling these cars and eventually started manufacturing parts as well.

The Mahindra CJ3 holds a special place in India's automotive history. Mahindra was established in 1945 by Kailash Chandra Mahindra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra along with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. After Pakistan's formation in 1948, Muhammad emigrated, leading to the company's renaming as Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M). In 1954, M&M began producing the CJ3 under licence from Willys.

Hindustan Ambassador – A Timeless Classic

The Hindustan Ambassador is an iconic name in India. First produced in 1957 and continuing until 2014, it was based on the Oxford Morris Series. Manufactured at HML's Uttarpara plant in West Bengal, it initially featured a side-valve petrol engine sourced from Austin Motors. Over time, it saw many updates and iterations.

The Fiat 1100 also became an iconic car in India. Initially imported and sold by PAL, the Fiat 1100 D was introduced in 1962 as a sporty alternative to the Ambassador. It offered more performance with a 49 bhp engine and continued selling until 1966 without major changes.

These early models set the stage for India's automotive journey. Today, brands like Mahindra are among leading SUV manufacturers in India and even export some models to the US.
