Lithion Becomes Hyundai's Official Partner For Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling In Canada
Hyundai Auto Canada has announced a significant partnership with Lithion, designating them as the main partner for collecting and recycling electric vehicle batteries. This agreement builds on a 2021 collaboration that validated Lithion's technology, which can recover 98% of minerals from batteries. The partnership involves over 250 Hyundai and Genesis dealers across Canada, enhancing efforts to recycle lithium-ion vehicle batteries.
Dealerships can now reach out to Lithion when they have end-of-life vehicle batteries. These batteries will be sent to Lithion's new recycling facility in Saint-Bruno, near Montreal. This collaboration supports Hyundai’s vision of reducing the ecological impact of electric vehicles by promoting battery recycling as part of a sustainable energy transition.
Lithion's expertise in battery management covers logistics, collection, dismantling, and recycling efficiently and safely. This partnership ensures that Hyundai's electric vehicles maintain a low carbon footprint. Ken Maisonville from Hyundai Auto Canada stated, "This partnership with Lithion allows us to ensure optimal recycling of our batteries, all while doing business with a Canadian company."
Yves Noël from Lithion expressed pride in partnering with Hyundai, highlighting their role in the battery manufacturing value chain. He said, "Today, we are extremely proud to count this global leader in the automotive industry among our customers." The collaboration underscores Lithion's importance in the energy transition towards lower carbon emissions.
Since June 2024, Lithion has expanded its commercial activities after completing its first plant for extracting minerals from lithium-ion batteries. They have secured several multi-year agreements with local and international partners within the electric vehicle sector. These partnerships highlight Lithion’s critical role in supporting a sustainable energy transition.
Lithion’s technology recovers up to 95% of battery components and 98% of critical minerals from lithium-ion batteries. This process significantly reduces environmental impact compared to traditional mining methods. By reintroducing these materials into the supply chain, Lithion contributes to reducing natural resource extraction demands.
