Mahindra Enhances Electric Vehicle Production With ABB's PixelPaint Technology

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has chosen ABB's PixelPaint technology for its new electric vehicle paint facility, ABB announced on Wednesday. This technology will be used to paint contrasting roofs and pillars of M&M's electric cars.

ABB's PixelPaint technology includes a paint head with over 1,000 tiny, individually controlled nozzles mounted on an ABB robot. "Our PixelPaint technology can apply large areas of uniform colour as well as the tiniest details with complete accuracy, without delaying the production line or the need for manual intervention," said Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line.

The deployment also involves 42 robots from the IRB 5500 family. This makes M&M the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to use PixelPaint technology for painting contrasting roofs and pillars, according to ABB.

"By deploying PixelPaint-equipped robots in dedicated cells, Mahindra's paint shop will be able to apply finishes such as contrasting roof and pillar treatments on its new line of EVs in a completely automated process," Reger stated.

Demand for Personalisation

The company noted that demand for personalisation options has been increasing in recent years. This trend is driving the adoption of advanced technologies like PixelPaint to meet customer preferences.

Mahindra will deploy 42 robots from the IRB 5500 family for painting contrasting roofs and pillars of its electric vehicles. The use of these robots aims to enhance precision and efficiency in the painting process.

The new facility represents a significant step forward in Mahindra's efforts to innovate within the automotive industry. By integrating advanced robotics and automation, M&M aims to improve both quality and production speed.

This move aligns with broader industry trends towards automation and customisation. As consumer preferences evolve, manufacturers are increasingly adopting technologies that allow for greater flexibility and precision in production processes.

The introduction of this technology is expected to streamline operations at Mahindra's paint shop. The automated process will reduce the need for manual intervention, thereby increasing efficiency and consistency in paint application.

This development underscores Mahindra's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance its manufacturing capabilities. The use of ABB's PixelPaint technology is a testament to this commitment.

The integration of these advanced robots is part of Mahindra's broader strategy to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving automotive market. By adopting innovative solutions, M&M aims to meet growing consumer demands for personalised vehicle options.

This initiative marks a significant milestone for Mahindra & Mahindra as it continues to push boundaries in automotive manufacturing. The deployment of ABB's PixelPaint technology highlights M&M's dedication to innovation and excellence.
