Custom-Built Mahindra Thar: A New Peak In SUV Modification
Mahindra Thar stands as one of India's most affordable and capable 4×4 SUVs. Launched in 2020, it quickly became popular among off-road enthusiasts. A recent video showcases a heavily modified Thar that dwarfs a Suzuki Hayabusa, showcasing the SUV's potential for extreme customisation.
The video, uploaded by Torque Block on YouTube, features an interview with the Thar's owner. He discusses the substantial modifications made to his vehicle. The SUV is fitted with Radar Renegade RT tyres, which the owner claims are perfect for both Indian roads and off-roading.
Significant upgrades include a lift kit from the USA, typically used in a Jeep Wrangler. The chassis has been reinforced, and an electric winch capable of pulling 15 tons has been installed. The front grille, headlamps, and bumper are all aftermarket parts, designed for off-road use.
The Thar now rides on 17-inch steel rims with 37-inch tyres. This combination, along with the lift kit, elevates the vehicle by 7 inches. Other modifications include rear disc brakes for better performance and a stage 2 tune from Code6, increasing the power by 20 bhp.

Mahindra Thar: Engine Options and Variants
Mahindra offers the Thar with both petrol and diesel engine options. The 4×4 variant features a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine, delivering 130 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The petrol version uses a 2.0-liter mStallion turbo engine, producing 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Both engines are available with manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.
The 4×2 or RWD variant comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine, offering less power and torque. It is available only with a manual gearbox, while the petrol engine remains the same as in the 4×4 variant.

Upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-Door Version
Mahindra is also developing a 5-door version of the Thar, aimed at providing more practicality. Expected to launch in a few months, it will come in both 4×4 and 4×2 variants. The 1.5-liter diesel engine is likely to power the lower variants, while both petrol and diesel engines will undergo retuning for the 5-door model.
