A Record Year - Maruti Suzuki Sold Over 20 Lakh Vehicles In 2023
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, achieved a remarkable feat by selling over 20 lakh vehicles in the calendar year. The total sales for 2023, from January to December, stood at an impressive 20,66,219 units, surpassing all other manufacturers in the country.
However, Maruti Suzuki's sales in December 2023 saw a slight decline compared to the previous year, with a total of 1,37,551 units sold. Maruti Suzuki's sales dropped by just around 1.2 per cent compared to the same period in 2022 when it sold 1,39,347 units.
Maruti Suzuki's overall performance throughout the year remained strong. Between April and December, Maruti sold 15,51,292 units in FY 2023-24, marking a significant increase of over 1 lakh units compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.
Digging deeper into the sales figures for specific segments reveals quite a few interesting trends. The mini car segment, which includes popular models like Alto and S-Presso, experienced a significant drop in sales, accounting for only 2,557 units in December 2023, compared to 9,765 units in the same period last year.
The compact segment, comprising models such as Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S, and WagonR, also witnessed a decline in sales, with 45,741 units sold in December 2023, down from 57,502 units in 2022.
On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki's decision to switch focus to the utility vehicle segment has proven quite fruitful, with higher profitability and increased sales. Models like Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, S-Cross, and XL6 contributed to a total of 45,957 units sold in December 2023, up from 33,008 units in the previous year.
Maruti's sole offering in the mid-size sedan segment, the Ciaz, saw a decline in sales, with only 489 units sold in December 2023 compared to 1,154 units the previous year. In the van segment, Maruti's Eeco remained popular, accounting for 10,034 units sold in December 2023 as it continued its domination of the Van space in India.
When considering total domestic PV sales, excluding sales to other OEMs, Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,04,778 units in December 2023 and 17,07,668 units for the entire year. This meant that there was a slight decline in sales of just over 7200 units for Maruti Suzuki, Y-o-Y for December.
Maruti Suzuki witnessed an improvement in exports, shipping 26,884 units in December 2023, compared to 21,796 units the previous year. The company's total exports for CY 2023 reached 2,69,046 units.
