Nissan Reveals First Integrated Report And New Sustainability Strategy For 2030

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has released its Integrated Report 2024, highlighting the company's progress towards its Ambition 2030 vision, with a strong focus on sustainability. This report details Nissan's strategies, business plans, and financial information, along with its long-term societal impact. Through various initiatives, Nissan aims to foster safe communities, contribute to societal advancement, and restore natural ecosystems.

The Nissan Green Program 2030 (NGP2030) and the Nissan Social Program 2030 (NSP2030) are pivotal to Nissan's new business plan, The Arc. These programs support the company's long-term vision of Ambition 2030. Joji Tagawa, chief sustainability officer at Nissan, stated, "In order to ensure that our progress towards our long-term vision is inclusive of and benefits all of our partners and stakeholders, it is pivotal that we collaborate with them to exchange ideas and opinions and evolve our efforts."

Nissan's 2030 Sustainability Blueprint

NGP2030 focuses on addressing climate change, resource dependency, air quality, and water issues. It aims to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius or less by moving towards carbon neutrality and a circular economy. Key targets include reducing per-vehicle lifecycle CO2 emissions by 30%, manufacturing CO2 emissions by 52%, and driving CO2 emissions for new models by 50% in major markets like Japan, the U.S., Europe, and China.

Since its first mid-term environmental action plan in 2002, Nissan has pursued an environmental philosophy of "a symbiosis of people, vehicles, and nature." NGP2030 continues this legacy by setting ambitious goals for reducing CO2 emissions across various stages of a vehicle's lifecycle. Additionally, Nissan aims to increase the ratio of sustainable materials in its vehicles to 40% in key markets.

The NSP2030 is an extension of Nissan's social initiatives under The Arc framework. It focuses on six pillars: safety, quality, responsible sourcing, intellectual property, communities, and employee empowerment. This program aims to make a positive societal impact while ensuring that human rights remain central to the company's corporate culture.

Nissan Social Program 2030

NSP2030 emphasises a people-centric approach where Nissan commits to growing alongside its employees, communities, partners, and society at large. The 'power of employees' pillar includes diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), employee human rights, learning and development opportunities as well as health and safety measures. This initiative aims to create a supportive work environment where employees can thrive.

Nissan has established employee resource groups (ERGs) focusing on LGBTQ+, working parents, multiculturalism among others. These ERGs promote activities driven by employees themselves for fostering an open and innovative workplace culture.

Tagawa further added that collaboration with partners is essential for evolving efforts towards sustainability: "Together we must steadily prepare for the future so we can make the company itself sustainable and ultimately contribute to a sustainable society." This aligns with Nissan's corporate purpose: Driving innovation to enrich people's lives.

Nissan remains committed to advancing sustainability through practical measures aimed at achieving a cleaner safer more inclusive world.
