Protean Electric Leads EV Innovation With Launch Of Gen 5 In-Wheel Motor
Protean Electric, based in the UK, has announced the production launch of its ProteanDrive Generation 5 ('Gen 5') in-wheel motor (IWM). This new generation offers enhanced performance, scalability, and affordability. The 'Gen 5' ProteanDrive Pd18 IWM is engineered, tested, and produced by Protean Electric and features a fully integrated inverter within an 18-inch wheel package. Production began in Q3 2023, with shipments dispatched globally from their advanced manufacturing facility in Tianjin, China.
The latest IWM from Protean allows vehicle manufacturers to enhance their products by improving space, ergonomics, efficiency, safety, and performance. These improvements lead to better margins and market share for OEMs. As the technology matures and costs decrease, more manufacturers are expected to adopt IWMs on a large scale.

Protean's Gen 5 Pd18 has been designed to meet the highest automotive industry standards. It can be configured for various wheel sizes, torque, and power capabilities. Integrated and separate inverters are available with 400V lead products today and 800V products expected by the end of 2024. The company received its IATF 16949 certificate earlier this year, and Pd18 has been granted R85 homologation.
This certification underscores Protean's position as an industry leader. It demonstrates full-scale industrialisation of one of the most mature IWM products available globally today. The certified IWM from Protean enables vehicle manufacturers to offer superior customer experiences through enhanced vehicle space and ergonomics.
