Škoda Launches New Superb IV Plug-In Hybrid With Enhanced Electric Range
Škoda has opened orders for the new Superb iV plug-in hybrid, starting at £41,465 OTR. This model features a 25.7kWh battery, offering up to 84 miles of all-electric range in E-mode. The combined output of 204PS ensures agile performance, with three hybrid driving modes and a six-speed DSG gearbox as standard.
The Superb iV is available in estate form only, providing up to 1,770 litres of boot space. It comes in three trim levels: SE Technology, SE L, and Laurin & Klement. Fleet drivers can benefit from a 5% Benefit in Kind rate, potentially saving on running costs.
The new battery pack is almost double the capacity of the previous model's 13kWh pack. Located under the rear seats, it boosts the all-electric driving range significantly. The battery also features integrated water cooling and accumulates energy from regenerative braking and external charging.
For the first time, Škoda's plug-in hybrid can accept DC rapid charging via a CCS socket. The new ports are relocated to the front wing for easier access. With a peak speed of 50kW, the battery charges from 10-80% in around 26 minutes using DC rapid chargers.
The Superb iV offers three driving modes accessible via the infotainment system:
- **E-mode:** Provides electric-only drive if the battery is sufficiently charged and the temperature is above -10°C.
- **Hybrid mode:** Uses either or both power sources to minimise fuel consumption.
- **Sport mode:** Delivers maximum power from both the petrol engine and electric motor for dynamic driving.
Trim Levels and Features
**SE Technology** starts at £41,465 OTR and includes 17-inch alloys, a 13-inch infotainment display with Sat Nav, heated front seats with lumbar support, and various driver assistance features like Adaptive Cruise Control.
**SE L**, priced from £44,820 OTR, adds larger 18-inch wheels, LED matrix beam headlights with advanced lighting functions, sports comfort seats with massage function, and an electrically-operated boot.
**Laurin & Klement (L&K)** starts at £48,540 OTR and includes 18-inch Belatrix aero anthracite alloy wheels, a premium sound system, heated multi-function steering wheel with DSG paddles, heated rear seats, windscreen and washer nozzles.
Drivetrain Details
The drivetrain combines a 1.5 TSI four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 150PS with an electric motor generating 116PS. Together they deliver a total output of 204PS. The motor can operate independently or alongside the engine for optimal performance.
The motor also starts the engine and replaces the traditional alternator. The system's efficiency is enhanced by redesigned power electronics and a larger battery pack.
Charging Options
In addition to DC rapid charging capabilities, the Superb iV can be charged on an AC supply at up to 11kW. A suitable AC charger can achieve a 10-80% charge in about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Thanks to these advancements in its plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the Superb iV offers potential savings on running costs for fleet drivers. Home charging options further enhance savings when driven in electric-only E-mode.
