Volkswagen Unveils Transporter 7: The Ultimate Workspace For On-the-Go Professionals
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the interior of its new 7th-generation Transporter. The revamped design maintains the iconic layout of its predecessor while incorporating modern features. Albert Kirzinger, Chief Designer at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, stated, "The Volkswagen van became an icon because form and function were in perfect harmony from the very beginning. We have taken this harmony to new heights with the new Transporter, and designed an interior that transposes the layout of the successful T6.1 into modern times."
The new Transporter’s digital cockpit landscape is enhanced by user-friendly hardkeys, making it straightforward to operate and ideal for professional use. Kirzinger added, "Our new Transporter has a visually harmonious cockpit landscape. What’s worth noting here is that we have purposely supplemented or combined the wide range of digital functions with physical controls – in the form of easy-to-use hardkeys." This combination ensures that professionals can work efficiently with minimal learning curve.
The high-quality interior combines well-thought-out features, durable materials, and stylish design elements. The developers focused on maximising usability, ensuring every detail is functional and accessible. The standard multifunction steering wheel includes clearly arranged buttons for ease of use. The infotainment system volume can be adjusted using either the steering wheel or a classic rotary knob.
The new Transporter starts via a Keyless Start system next to a 12-inch digital instrument display and a 13-inch infotainment screen. Below these displays is the steering column selector lever for automatic transmission, which varies based on the drive system. This repositioning creates more legroom, while manual gearbox models retain their gear lever in the centre console.
Depending on the wheelbase and roof version, the new Transporter offers a load compartment ranging from 5.8 to 9.0 m3, accommodating up to three Euro pallets. It also features various charging points to support tradespeople, service providers, couriers, and emergency services in operating their equipment. These include USB-A, USB-C, 12V sockets, and optional 230V interfaces.
In diesel versions, a 230V socket (400 W) is located on the driver’s seat frame. Electric and plug-in hybrid models can have two additional sockets near the D-pillars, providing a total output of 2,300 W across all three connection points. This ensures ample power for devices ranging from laptops to circular saws.
Optimised Workspace
The interior design prioritises efficiency with features like large cup holders at the front of the centre console and additional storage compartments in the upper dash panel. Kirzinger noted: "We’ve really used every nook and cranny to maximise functionality." The high dash panel and naturally high seating position create a typical Volkswagen van feeling.
The handbrake lever has been replaced by a switch for the parking brake located in the centre dash panel, freeing up space in the footwell. This change contributes to an ergonomically perfect workspace with a clean look.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles continues its legacy of producing versatile and dependable vans with this latest model. Nearly 70 years ago, they introduced their first Transporter in the UK, setting a standard for efficiency and reliability that persists today.
