ABB Survey Indicates Positive Outlook For EV Production Growth By 2025 Amid Deadline Doubts
Automotive manufacturing leaders are optimistic about the growth of electric vehicle (EV) production in 2025, with 75% predicting an increase. However, there are rising concerns about meeting current deadlines for full EV production. ABB Robotics' third Automotive Manufacturing Outlook Survey, conducted with Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, offers insights into these industry perspectives.
Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Automotive Business Line, stated, "This year’s survey found that overall, automotive manufacturing professionals are optimistic about EV production growth in 2025, but unsure about reaching 100 percent electric vehicle production timetables due to factors now often beyond the factory environment."

The survey revealed that 31% of respondents expect EV output to rise by over 10%, while another 44% anticipate a growth of up to 10%. Only a small portion, 21%, foresee either no change or a decline in production. Despite this optimism, confidence in meeting regional deadlines for full EV production between 2030-2040 has decreased. Currently, 65% doubt achieving these targets within the timeframe.
Daniel Harrison, Chief Analyst for Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, noted that hybrid vehicle production remains strong. He said, "Hybrid passenger vehicle production remains buoyant with the global manufacturing community expecting to produce more cars in 2025." This aligns with the survey's findings that the pace of EV adoption may not meet legislative deadlines for a fully electric future.
The survey also highlighted expectations for hybrid powertrain growth in 2025. A significant 67% predict an increase in plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) production, with 20% forecasting over a 10% rise. Similarly, Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) output is expected to grow by 62% according to those surveyed.
Factors outside the factory environment are seen as major barriers to achieving full EV production goals. Consumer demand and confidence in charging infrastructure were specifically mentioned as challenges. These external factors contribute to skepticism about meeting proposed deadlines.
