Mercedes-Benz G 450d: Top 5 Things You Should Know
Mercedes-Benz India has reintroduced the diesel engine option for its iconic G-Class SUV, marking the comeback of the G 450d after a year-long break. With this launch, the G-Class range in India now offers three distinct powertrain choices - petrol, diesel, and all-electric. The G 450d is priced at Rs 2.9 crore (ex-showroom), and only 50 units of this diesel-powered variant have been allocated for India in the first batch.
Design
The Mercedes G 450d retains the unmistakable, boxy silhouette that defines the G-Class while receiving a few subtle updates to distinguish it from its predecessor, the G 400d. At the front, it sports a refreshed grille featuring four chrome-finished horizontal slats, flanked by the classic round LED headlamps. The front and rear bumpers have also been slightly redesigned to give the SUV a cleaner and more modern appeal.

The G 450d rides on new 20-inch AMG alloy wheels that enhance its road presence while maintaining its rugged character. Despite being less aggressive in styling than the AMG G 63, the G 450d continues to exude an aura of strength and sophistication, staying true to its luxury off-roader identity.
Interior & Features
Inside, the G 450d carries forward the plush and technologically advanced cabin familiar to G-Class enthusiasts. It comes equipped with twin 12.3-inch displays - one for the digital instrument cluster and another for the infotainment system. The system supports augmented reality navigation, a "transparent bonnet" feature to assist in off-road driving, and the intuitive "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant.
The cabin is upholstered in high-quality Nappa leather, complemented by customisable ambient lighting that elevates the interior ambience. Audio duties are handled by a 760W 18-speaker Burmester surround sound system with Dolby Atmos support, ensuring an immersive listening experience.
On the safety front, the G 450d comes with a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS package, which includes active brake assist, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera system. Combined with its premium materials and ergonomic layout, the interior balances rugged capability with first-class luxury.
Powertrain & Performance
The Mercedes G 450d houses a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The setup produces an impressive 367hp and 750Nm of torque, with the hybrid system capable of adding up to 20hp during acceleration. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Compared to the outgoing G 400d, the new G 450d delivers 37hp and 50Nm more power and torque, respectively. Mercedes claims a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 210km/h.
Other Specifications
The G 450d's off-road capabilities remain a key highlight. It offers a ground clearance of 241mm, a maximum water fording depth of 700mm, and approach, breakover, and departure angles of 31, 26, and 30 degrees, respectively. The SUV can also maintain stability on side slopes of up to 35 degrees, reaffirming its go-anywhere credentials.
Despite these capabilities, the G 450d also ensures on-road comfort thanks to its refined suspension setup and adaptive drive modes, making it as competent on highways as it is on rugged terrain.
Price & Rivals
At Rs 2.9 crore (ex-showroom), the Mercedes G 450d is priced Rs 20 lakh lower than the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology, but Rs 1.6 crore higher than the range-topping Land Rover Defender 110 Trophy Edition diesel, which costs Rs 1.3 crore. However, the G-Class justifies its premium with unmatched legacy, craftsmanship, and exclusivity - reinforced by the fact that only 50 units of the diesel variant have been brought to India in its initial batch.
DriveSpark Thinks
With the reintroduction of the G 450d, Mercedes-Benz now offers the legendary G-Class in petrol, diesel, and electric forms, giving buyers the freedom to choose their preferred combination of performance, efficiency, and technology - all wrapped in the unmistakable charm of the G-Wagen.
