Apple's latest iOS public beta introduces video playback support for CarPlay, potentially allowing users to stream Apple TV content directly on their car infotainment screens. However, the functionality will operate under strict safety conditions.
Apple has released the iOS 26.4 public beta, bringing several updates to the CarPlay interface for select users. The new feature, officially called 'AirPlay Video in the Car', enables video playback when the vehicle is parked, allowing occupants to enjoy their videos on the infotainment display.
In addition to video support, the update brings subtle design and interface refinements. The playback layout closely mirrors the experience found on iPhones and iPads, offering a familiar and intuitive user interface. Several beta testers have already shared screenshots showing the feature in action. Apple first previewed this capability during WWDC 2025 and is now preparing for a broader rollout.
Apple CarPlay Update: An Edge Over Android Auto
Once officially launched, this addition could strengthen Apple CarPlay's appeal compared to Android Auto, as both platforms serve as primary wireless connectivity systems for modern infotainment units. Users may also be able to resume playback seamlessly from where they left off on their iPhone, creating a more integrated and premium connected experience.
Safety remains a key priority. Apple restricts video streaming while the vehicle is in motion, ensuring playback is available only when the car is stationary. This limitation helps minimise driver distraction and enhances road safety.
However, availability will depend on individual car manufacturers, as automakers must enable support through compatible software updates on their infotainment systems for AirPlay video integration to function.
The updated Apple CarPlay experience is expected to roll out in the coming months. There are also ongoing speculations about Apple extending navigation support to digital instrument clusters, potentially displaying simplified directional guidance for a more focused driving experience. If widely adopted by manufacturers, these enhancements could significantly elevate the in-car experience for iPhone users.
