BYD Reveals Second-Generation Blade Battery: 10% To 70% Charge In 5 Minutes

Chinese EV giant BYD has unveiled the second-generation Blade Battery, which brings a significant leap in both battery architecture and electric vehicle charging technology. BYD claims that EVs equipped with the new Blade 2,0 battery can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in just five minutes under optimal conditions
.
The announcement was made during BYD's recent technology showcase event in China. Along with the new battery, the company also introduced an ultra-fast Flash charging ecosystem designed to dramatically reduce charging times for compatible vehicles.

BYD Blade Gen 2.0 Battery - Improved Battery Architecture & Flash Charge Tech

The Blade Battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for its safety and durability. The second-generation Blade battery improves energy density, thermal management and charging efficiency compared with the original Blade Battery introduced in 2020.

One of the biggest highlights of the new battery technology is the charging speed. According to BYD, the second-generation Blade Battery can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in around five minutes, while a 10 percent to 97 percent charge can be achieved in roughly nine minutes.

The Blade gen 2 battery is also designed to maintain strong charging performance in extreme temperatures. Even at -30°C, the battery can reportedly charge from 20 percent to 97 percent in about 12 minutes.

The new battery works with BYD's Flash Charging system, which delivers up to 1.5 MW of peak charging power through a high-voltage architecture. Such charging times bring EV recharge speeds closer to the convenience of traditional petrol vehicles, addressing one of the biggest concerns around electric mobility.

This charging system is significantly more powerful than most current fast chargers and is designed specifically to support the rapid charging capabilities of the second-generation Blade Battery. To support the technology, BYD plans to install around 20,000 flash-charging stations across China by the end of 2026.

BYD Blade Gen 2.0 Battery - Future Models To Use The Battery

The second-generation Blade Battery will power several upcoming BYD vehicles. Early models expected to adopt the technology include the Yangwang U7, Denza Z9 GT and multiple new BYD EVs across different segments.

These models could also benefit from improved driving range, with some vehicles expected to exceed 1,000km range under China's CLTC test cycle when equipped with the new battery technology. With ultra-fast charging and improved energy density, the new Blade 2.0 battery represents BYD's latest push to accelerate EV adoption and address concerns around charging convenience

It remains to be seen when BYD brings the second-generation Blade battery to the models it retails in our market, including the Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7 and eMax 7. In fact, many Indian EV brands source batteries from BYD, and if introduced here, buyers will benefit from improved range and faster charging times.
