E20 Petrol With Minimum RON 95 Mandatory From April 1 — What It Means For Your Vehicle
The Government of India has mandated the sale of E20 petrol, fuel blended with 20 per cent ethanol, with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 across the country from April 1, 2026.
The new rule by the Central Government requires oil marketing companies to supply petrol that meets both the E20 blend and RON 95 specifications nationwide, which should help curb certain fears about the blended fuel that is now the standard form of petrol on sale in the country.

E20 petrol is a mixture of conventional petrol and 20 per cent ethanol, a biofuel produced from agricultural sources such as sugarcane, maize and surplus grains. Ethanol burns cleaner than pure petrol and can be produced domestically, reducing dependence on imported crude oil.
India previously supplied non-blended petrol before switching to E10 petrol as the standard fuel. The E20 petrol rollout began in phases in 2023 and is now implemented nationwide as the primary petrol grade available at fuel stations across the nation.

What Does RON 95 Mean?
RON (Research Octane Number) measures a fuel's resistance to engine knocking. The phenomenon of engine knocking occurs when there is premature combustion inside the engine cylinder. Engine knocking can lead to reduced power output, decreased fuel efficiency, and, in the worst case, catastrophic damage to parts of the engine itself, including pistons, valves and other components.
Higher octane fuels, such as RON 95, can withstand greater compression before ignition. This makes them suitable for modern engines, particularly those with higher compression ratios or turbochargers.
Why India Is Moving To E20 Fuel - Is It Safe For Your Vehicle?
According to the Indian Government, the push for ethanol blending is aimed at three key goals:
• Reducing crude oil imports
• Lowering vehicle emissions
• Supporting farmers through increased demand for ethanol feedstock
Higher ethanol blended fuel usage also helps India move toward its energy security and climate targets.
New vehicles sold in India today are designed to be E20-compatible. Automakers have updated fuel systems, engine components and calibration in preparation for the nationwide shift.
However, older vehicles not specifically certified or calibrated for E20 can experience a slight drop in fuel efficiency, along with changes in engine performance. This is due to the fact that ethanol contains less energy per litre than petrol.
Will E20 RON 95 Replace Regular E20?
From April 1, E20 petrol with RON 95 effectively becomes the standard petrol available at fuel stations across India. Oil companies have already expanded blending capacity, storage and distribution infrastructure to support full-scale supply.
However, as per PTI, the government will allow temporary exemptions in specific regions if logistical challenges arise, but the long-term plan is for uniform nationwide availability of E20 RON 95.
Fuel suppliers, on the other hand, will continue to offer petrol (both pure and blended), with ratings higher than RON 95, an example of which is Indian Oil's XP100, alongside the new RON 95 E20 petrol blend.
What you will also observe at the fuel stations is that current blends that feature an octane number of 95 like Indian Oil's XP95, will either no longer be seen or will be the primary way of how the new RON 95 compliant E20 petrol blends will be marketed.
