JSW Motors Targets India’s Auto Market With EV & Hybrid Strategy
JSW Group is preparing to launch its own independent automotive brand in India, despite its successful partnership with MG Motor India. The company is inviting dealership applications through advertisements in leading newspapers, indicating its strong intent to expand its presence and play a bigger role in the Indian automobile industry.
JSW Group Entering the Indian Automobile Sector
The Indian automotive market remains one of the largest and fastest-growing globally, with electric mobility gaining strong momentum in recent years. Chinese automaker SAIC-owned MG Motor currently operates in India through its partnership with the JSW Group, and the collaboration has delivered great success so far.

MG's electric models, particularly the Windsor EV and Comet EV, are experiencing growing popularity in their respective segments, significantly contributing to their sales in India. With this, MG Motor India has become one of the leading EV sellers in the market, next to Tata Motors and Mahindra Electric.
JSW is reportedly planning to increase its shareholding in MG Motor India to gain greater influence over strategic decisions, including product planning and brand growth. Together, they aim to achieve nearly 75% of total sales from electric and hybrid vehicles in the coming years.

JSW Motor Launch Expected by 2026
Alongside this partnership, JSW Group is also preparing to introduce its own independent automobile brand, likely to be called JSW Motors. The company is expected to introduce the Jetour SUVs (a model owned by China's Chery Holding Group) in India under its new brand. The first offering is likely to be a rebadged version of the Jetour T2 SUV for the Indian market.
Jetour T2-Based SUV
This upcoming SUV is expected to feature plug-in hybrid technology paired with a 1.5-litre hybrid petrol engine. It is being positioned as a capable off-road SUV, equipped with intelligent switching between multiple driving modes, enhanced terrain passability, an intelligent creeping mode for low-speed control, and automatic switching between 2WD and 4WD systems for improved traction in demanding conditions.

The Jetour T2-based JSW SUV is initially expected to arrive by mid-2026. However, recent concerns regarding high import duties on Chinese components could delay the launch to late 2026 or even early 2027. The new JSW Motors SUV is expected to be priced at around ₹30 lakh (ex-showroom) in the premium hybrid SUV segment.
Compact Electric SUV
The second product from JSW Motors is expected to launch in 2027 and could be based on the Chery iCar V23 platform, which has already been spotted testing in India. In China, this compact SUV is offered with AWD and battery packs of 59.93 kWh and 81.76 kWh, producing around 211 bhp and delivering claimed ranges of approximately 360 km and 430 km, respectively.

New Investments & Expansion Plans
JSW Group is also planning a major investment of around ₹3,000-₹5,000 crore to build a second manufacturing plant in Halol, Gujarat. Once operational, the JSW-MG alliance will be able to achieve an annual production capacity of up to 3 lakh units, helping them meet both domestic demand and export markets.
Additionally, the company is working on a large greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, to support its independent automotive operations. The Jetour T2-based SUV and the iCar V23-derived model are expected to be assembled here initially, with potential for full local production in the future.
JSW's aggressive investments and bold expansion plans indicate that the company is clearly committed to expanding its presence in the Indian automotive market. Planning for dealership expansion, a sharp focus on EVs and plug-in hybrids, and strategic collaborations with MG Motor and Chery Holding, the company is positioning itself as a long-term player in the Indian Automobile sector.
