McLaren 12C Discontinued, Free Upgrade Offered To Existing Customers

By Ganesh

McLaren 12C, the sports car that put the British supercar maker back on the automotive map of the world three years back, has been discontinued. In doing so McLaren has done exactly what it insisted it wouldn't do when it launched the 650S.

When McLaren launched the 650S earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, which is actually a more advanced version of the 12C with the face of the P1 hypercar, it said production of 12C was being put on hold.

However, it said the 650S was not a replacement and that production of the 12C would resume in the future depending on the demand. Now, through a letter signed by Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren, sent to all their customers, the company has officially announced end of the 12C's production.

What's admirable is McLaren's commitment to its customers as the letter also mentions that all existing 12C sport cars will be given upgrades. This includes new cars, cars bought through McLaren's Qualified Program (used car program) and the few cars that are still left in dealerships. There are approximately 3500 odd 12Cs left around the world, including Spider versions.

Upgrades to 12C sport cars include Active Aero software update that will activate automatic Airbrake deployment to improve stability when lifting off the throttle or cresting a hill and under heavy braking. The update will also include a new DRS (Drag Reduction System) mode which lowers the wing when driving at speed in a straight line, improving high-speed aerodynamics.

Furthermore, The Technology Upgrade package includes improvements to functionality and usability of the Android-based IRIS system.

Last, but not the least, new features which have debuted in the 650S, which are reversing camera and DAB radio, will be offered to 12C owners at special discounted price.

The McLaren lineup currently, then consists of the 650S and the P1. But new models to fit in-between and even below the 650S are being developed by McLaren and all future cars will wear the new common front face of the P1.
