How To Clean and Lubricate Motorcycle Chain: 3 Simple Steps
A motorcycle chain sends power from the powertrain to the rear wheels. Though this component takes care of such an important job, many bike users fail to maintain their bike's chain properly. Even service centres sometimes skip this to save time and a few bucks.
To make matters even more complicated, a motorcycle chain can attract a lot of dust and this can significantly affect the bike's overall performance as well as reliability. As such, here are 3 simple steps on how to clean and lubricate motorcycle chain.
Step 1: Positioning The Bike
Before diving into the nitty-gritty, position your bike properly by parking it on a centre stand. This setup is crucial as it allows for easy access to the chain and sprocket, enabling you to rotate them freely during the cleaning process.
For those bikes without a centre stand, a paddock stand can be a worthwhile investment to facilitate this task. This way, it is easier to clean and lubricate the chain of your motorcycle.
Step 2: Cleaning The Chain
The next step is to give your chain a thorough wash. Given the dusty conditions prevalent in many regions, especially in India, motorcycle chains can become a magnet for grime and debris.
Though some bikes feature enclosed chain covers for added protection, sportier models tend to have exposed chains that require more frequent cleaning. Pressure washing can be an effective method to dislodge surface dirt and prep the chain for a deeper clean.
Once the preliminary wash is done, it's time to bring out the WD-40. Spray it evenly along the chain while rotating it to ensure full coverage. Allow the cleaner to penetrate the links for a few minutes, then start scrubbing with your brush to dislodge any remaining grime.
Finish off by wiping the chain with a clean rag to reveal its original metallic lustre. This is a very important step as cleaning the WD-40 ensures the lubricant properly adheres to the chain and sprocket's surface.
Step 3: Lubricate
Finally, lubricate the chain to ensure smooth operation. Use the nozzle of the lubricant spray can to apply oil to each link, employing short bursts and rotating the chain for even distribution. Be mindful to avoid over-lubricating and to keep lubricant off the rear tire to prevent slippage.
